Friday, October 12: Prophetstown SP, Illinois

When I arose from my tent this morning, John came over and invited me over for some hot breakfast, he said it would beat the oatmeal and coffee that I had planned on. So I graciously accepted and joined Brenda in the trailer. She made me eggs, bacon, biscuits and coffee and sat at the table chit chatting with me. Before I knew it, an hour and a half had passed. So, I thanked John and Brenda again for their wonderful hospitality and gave Brenda a big hug before breaking down my tent and heading out. It’s people like them that restore my faith in human kind.

I was thankful that the drive to Prophetstown State Park was a relatively short one and I arrived at about three in the afternoon. I also gained an hour today by driving into a new time zone, so that was nice. I set up camp once again and was the only tent camper…again. It’s supposed to get cold tonight, potentially into the thirties with a chance of frost and everyone keeps telling me that tent camping is pretty ballsy. But I know what I’m doing, I’ve got really good gear and I know more than people expect. I have my heavy duty tarp strategically placed and tied down around my tent adding an extra 20-30 degrees of insulation and a sleeping bag with extra down to keep me toasty and warm.

I received a few invitations to join some folks around the campfire before ultimately deciding to join my neighbor and his little boy, Perry and PJ. PJ is just the cutest little five year old and he we chatted all about kindergarten while his dad set up camp. We played tag and hide and go seek and they invited me to join them for a dinner of pork chops and veggies followed by a drumstick ice cream cone for dessert! Now this was the life. Perry even leant me a heater for the tent just in case it got too cold in there for me. They were such nice people.
