Sunday, October 14: Black Hawk SP, Iowa

A nasty thunderstorm hit around four in the morning and the sound of the rain against the tarp woke me up. “Oh shit,” I thought, I hate packing up a wet tent. Later in the morning I grabbed my atlas and tried to determine where my next stop would be, I’ve been without WiFi for a week now, so I called my mom and had her look up some parks for me as well as the weather. All of my park options were expecting rain, the only difference was the ones in South Dakota were going to be about 20 degrees colder. So, I decided to stay at Black Hawk an extra day and go to South Dakota tomorrow.

I decided to head out in search of the largest popcorn ball…but I pulled over to the side of the road and put on my hazards just to make sure I was headed in the right direction. Before I knew it, there was a police officer at my window and he scared the piss out of me. He just wanted to make sure that I was okay and see if I needed and assistance. I couldn’t believe it, you never find that kind of service in Florida. There really is such a thing as midwestern values and kindness. He let me know that I was headed in the right direction and I was on my way again.

The popcorn ball was just as hokie as I expected, but I took a picture nonetheless. Then, I made my way to Carrol, about 20 miles away in search of a good hot meal and some WiFi. I’m glad I took today to rest because I have a long, wet drive ahead of me tomorrow as I make my way towards Badlands National Park in South Dakota. It’s supposed to be rainy and windy all night again and I’m not looking forward to tomorrow’s cold and wet weather. I think I’ll curl up with a movie tonight in my tent and turn in early.
